Good news for audit cases: the CBDT has given 21 extra days. The tax audit report for AY 2026–27 can now be filed by 21 October 2026 instead of 30 September 2026. The income tax return for the same taxpayers is now due on 21 November 2026 instead of 31 October 2026.
The relief comes through CBDT Circular No. 07/2026, dated 28 September 2026. The extra time is short, and it applies only to certain taxpayers. This blog explains who is covered, what to finish before the deadline and what a delay can cost you.
Key Dates at a Glance
| Compliance (AY 2026–27) | Earlier Due Date | Revised Due Date |
|---|---|---|
| Tax audit report (Form 3CA/3CB with Form 3CD) | 30 September 2026 | 21 October 2026 |
| Income tax return for the specified category | 31 October 2026 | 21 November 2026 |
What Is a Tax Audit Under Section 44AB?
A tax audit checks whether your books of account follow the Income-tax Act, 1961. It applies to businesses and professionals whose turnover, gross receipts or other conditions cross the limits set in Section 44AB.
During the audit, your auditor will:
- Review your books of account and financial statements
- Check the income, expenses and deductions you have claimed
- Match your TDS and TCS records
- Flag differences that can affect your return
- Prepare the report in Form 3CA or Form 3CB, along with Form 3CD
Form 3CA is used when your accounts are also audited under another law, such as the Companies Act. Form 3CB is used in other cases.
Who Gets the Extended Deadline?
The extension applies to taxpayers referred to at Serial No. 2 of the table under Explanation 2 to Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961. Eligibility depends on this specific statutory category, so taxpayers should verify whether the revised deadlines apply to their circumstances.
Taxpayers outside this category must follow their applicable statutory deadlines. Certain transfer pricing cases may have different filing timelines, so these requirements should be checked separately.
What Has Not Changed
The circular moves only the income tax audit report and return dates. It does not change:
- TDS and TCS payment and statement due dates
- GST return due dates
- Company law dates, such as the AGM
So keep your other compliance calendars as they are.
Why Is the Tax Audit Due Date Extension Important for Businesses?
The additional time can help businesses address outstanding financial reporting and tax compliance activities.
1. More Time for Financial Reconciliation
Businesses can review their financial statements, ledgers and supporting documents to identify differences before finalising their audit reports.
2. Improved Accuracy in Tax Reporting
The revised deadline allows additional time to reconcile income, expenses, TDS records and other tax-related information.
3. Completion of Pending Audit Procedures
Organisations with complex transactions, multiple business locations or extensive financial records may require additional time to complete audit verification.
4. Better Coordination with Tax Professionals
Businesses can coordinate with their auditors and finance teams to resolve outstanding queries and finalise disclosures.
5. Reduced Risk of Filing Errors
Additional preparation time may help identify reporting inconsistencies and minimise avoidable corrections.
However, the extension should not be treated as a reason to postpone compliance activities until the final date.
Key Compliance Activities to Complete Before 21 October 2026
Businesses covered by the revised deadline should prioritise the following activities.
Review Financial Statements
Ensure that the balance sheet, profit and loss account, schedules and supporting records are complete and consistent.
Reconcile GST and Income Tax Records
Compare relevant GST returns, financial records and income tax information to identify material differences requiring explanation.
Verify TDS and TCS Information
Review tax deduction and collection records against the books of account and applicable tax statements.
Examine Tax Audit Disclosures
Verify relevant disclosures in Form 3CD, including those relating to depreciation, statutory payments, deductions and other applicable reporting requirements.
Complete Audit Report Submission
Coordinate the preparation, electronic submission and taxpayer acceptance of the applicable audit report through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?
If you do not get your accounts audited or do not furnish the report on time, a penalty can apply under Section 271B. It is the lower of:
- 5% of total sales, turnover or gross receipts, or
- ₹1,50,000
Section 273B can give relief if you show a reasonable cause for the delay. A late return also brings interest under Section 234A and a fee under Section 234F once the revised return date passes.
